  • Prevent, Treat and Rehabilitate Injuries with an Athletic Training Degree from Gannon University

    Gannon University’s Master of Athletic Training program prepares students to deliver patient-centered health care through classroom and clinical education experiences. Students will study essential topics including injury prevention, clinical examination and diagnosis, acute care of injuries and illnesses, and more. Students will also be well prepared and eligible to take the national certification examination through the Board of Certification Inc. Athletic trainers work under the direction of physicians in a variety of health care settings including universities, high schools, professional sports, hospitals, physician offices, industrial settings, performing arts, military, public services and more.

    • Earn your bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 5 years or a stand-alone Master of Athletic Training in 2 years.

    Gain real-world knowledge through key athletic training courses including:

    Clinical Application of Care and Prevention in Athletic Training: Develop, master, and apply essential skills needed for the prevention, assessment, and treatment of acute and emergent illnesses and injuries.

    Evaluation and Treatment of the Upper and Lower Extremities, and Head, Neck and Spine: Learn, master, and apply knowledge and techniques related to: orthopedic injury and medical evaluation; therapeutic interventions including rehabilitation exercises and modalities; prevention and management of physical and mental health and well-being

    Clinical Experience: Engage in a variety of clinical opportunities and patient encounters in multiple settings and sites while you are supervised by licensed professionals as you progress from observation experiences to full-time immersions in preparation for autonomous practice.

    Students will gain foundational knowledge in the first three years of the undergraduate plan of study. These experiences will prepare students for the rigors of graduate school and the athletic training profession. Through these educational opportunities, you can:

    • Gain knowledge in kinesiology, exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, and care and prevention of athletic injuries.
    • Secure your career in a growing field with diverse opportunities that include employment in universities, hospitals and physician offices, performing arts, professional sports, military and more.
    • The NATA reported the average national salary for athletic trainers was $61,998 in 2021. The average growth in this profession is higher than average according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Program graduates will possess the necessary skills in cognitive, behavioral (psychosocial) and clinical skills for successful practice as a healthcare provider. Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in clinical decision-making, evaluation techniques, injury and illness prevention and therapeutic interventions. Students will be proficient in psychosocial techniques and promotion of health and wellness in a healthcare and community setting. Students will demonstrate proficiency in verbal and written communication as a competent health care provider.
  2. Develop health care practitioners that practice evidence-based medicine and life-long learning skills in the health professions. Students will demonstrate the use of research to make informed clinical decision making. Students will demonstrate proficiency in developing, researching, and analyzing focused clinical questions for development of original scholarship. Students will demonstrate understanding of continuing professional development throughout the lifespan of a career.
  3. Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to work within an interdisciplinary health care field promoting leadership, teamwork, ethical behavior and the administrative functions of a healthcare provider. After completion of the program, students examine various administrative models to incorporate into clinical practice. After completion of the program, students will demonstrate ethical responsibility as it relates to ethical practices and professionalism within national, state, and institutional policies. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to describe the values associated with leadership, service, respect, compassion, and empathy in a clinical and community environment.
  4. Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to work within an interdisciplinary health care field promoting leadership, teamwork, ethical behavior and the administrative functions of a healthcare provider.
