Dr. Karen Dishman is an occupational therapy practitioner, educator, and leader with more than 25 years of clinical and academic experience. She currently serves as Interim Director, guiding curriculum development, accreditation preparation, faculty mentoring, admissions, and program operations. She has also served as an assistant professor in the OTD program since 2021, teaching extensively across the OT curriculum, including foundational occupational therapy theory, models, and frames of reference; psychosocial intervention; pediatric intervention; physical disabilities intervention; communities; clinical reasoning; and emerging areas of practice. Her teaching is grounded in real-world clinical experience and a commitment to preparing students for evidence-based practice. She is also the faculty advisor for the campus Assistive Technology club. Her scholarship focus is on assistive technology education in occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant programs, service-learning, and interprofessional education.

Dr. Dishman's professional background includes 18 years of experience with children 3-22 in the school setting, as well as some outpatient pediatrics experience. This gave her ample experience in patients with cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, orthopedic conditions, autism, learning disabilities, and many other conditions. Dr. Dishman also has 5 years of skilled nursing experience with an emphasis on patients with CVA, joint replacement, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia. Dr. Dishman also served as the assistive technology coordinator for 3 years in the school setting with extensive experience in many categories of assistive technology such as blind/low vision, hearing impairments, cognitive impairments, learning disabilities, and physical disabilities.
