Project NePTWNE, which is short for Nano & Polymer Technology for Water and Neural-networks in Erie, is a six-phase project that takes an inclusive and holistic approach to addressing water quality, climate change, economic development, and quality of life.

Phase two involves the creation of the Great Lakes Research & Education Center. In addition to a water testing and research facility, the Center will include a research facility and interpretive exhibits that serve as a laboratory to support research on water quality and water resource sustainability and an education center for local residents, as well as visitors to Erie to explore the greater impact that climate change is having on our Great Lakes.

The Erie County Public Library will soon welcome Gannon University’s Great Lakes Research and Education Center.

This 3,280-square-foot center will be on the library’s east side and will include a laboratory and interpretive exhibits to support research on water quality and water resource sustainability. A NOAA Science on a Sphere exhibit will also be added; all of this will be accessible to the public free of charge.

The interpretive center will highlight research initiatives being led by Gannon University faculty and students, and the university’s collaborators will also join them in exploring the Great Lakes and Presque Isle Bay and studying a wide range of challenges – from invasive species to harmful algae blooms to microplastics and propagating native fish species.

A change like this is significant for the county. Linked here, you will find answers to some frequently asked questions to assist with better understanding this project and why it is in the 90,000-square-foot Raymond M. Blasco, M.D. Memorial Library.
