A well-deserved beach dinner after a long day of assessments.
Blair Carsone, Ph.D., assistant professor and doctoral capstone coordinator of Gannon-Ruskin's occupational therapy doctorate program, and Rita Lenhardt, D.H.Sc., assistant professor for Ruskin’s speech-language pathology program, recently concluded their second annual GIFT trip to Grenada, West Indies. Accompanied by twelve graduate students—six from each respective program—they dedicated their time to assessing and treating children at two schools: the Island Montessori School (serving K-12 grades) and the TCC Preschool (serving 0-5 yrs).
In addition to providing essential services, the Gannon faculty and students conducted training sessions for parents, teachers and nursing students. Amid their busy schedule, they also experienced Grenada’s vibrant culture through excursions into the rainforest, engaging with wildlife, and enjoying a catamaran tour of the underwater sculpture park, complete with snorkeling and a breathtaking sunset.
The team also visited the Autistic Foundation of Grenada, offering support to children with autism on the island. An educational presentation was delivered to nursing students at St. George's University. Throughout the entire stay, the graduate students collaborated seamlessly, co-treating children and exchanging valuable knowledge and experiences, as well as fostering cultural sensitivity.
The success of this GIFT program is owed to the generous support of individuals like Gannon University President Dr. Walter Iwanenko Jr. and his wife Mary, as well as all employees, students and alumni who contributed. These donations have not only made the trip possible but have also played a crucial role in shaping Gannon-Ruskin students into global citizens.
