Adam J. Susmarski was born and raised in Erie, PA. He attended Cathedral Preparatory School and graduated summa cum laude from Gannon University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport and exercise science as part of the medical kinesiology track. He was the recipient of the Archbishop John Mark Gannon award, which honors students achieving the highest grade point average upon graduation.
He went on to pursue his medical degree at Michigan State University where he was elected President of the military and neurology student organizations, received back to back “TOUCH” service awards for distinguished work in the community and was selected to join the Sigma Sigma Phi Honors Society for both his commitment to volunteering in the community and academic standing of top 25% in his class. He completed his internship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., followed by a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA where he currently serves as chief resident.
Adam will be completing his residency in June 2017 and upon graduation will be pursuing a career in Sports Medicine in the United States Navy. He initially considered further fellowship training but was offered a once-in-a-lifetime job opportunity. Dr. Susmarski will be beginning his new assignment with the Navy in July 2017 and is looking forward to providing medical care to the nation’s future leaders and commissioned officers.
Adam was a recipient of the United States Navy Health Professional Scholarship and has served in the United States Navy Medical Corps since his graduation in 2010. His Naval career has included deployments to Afghanistan, Kuwait, Africa, and Europe. Adam is a decorated Naval officer with multiple individual and unit recognitions including but not limited to Navy/Marine Corps Commendation and Achievement Medals, Navy Unit Commendation, Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle “E”, ISAF NATO, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal with Bronze Star, Seabee Combat Warfare Device, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Junior Officer of the Year, and the U.S. Navy Green “H” award. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander two years ahead of schedule in the fall of 2014. He currently serves as the Steel City Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Medical Officer in Pittsburgh, PA.
Throughout his medical career, Adam has spent a significant amount of time working in the field of Sports Medicine and has provided care to a wide range of athletes in a variety of sports and levels of competition including high school, college, and professional.
Adam’s academic pursuits include work on multiple book chapters, peer reviewed manuscripts, grants, and presentations on award-winning research at national and international medical conferences. Most recently he presented at the Maryland Association of Osteopathic Physicians conference, UPMC Mercy Rehab School of Nursing and is a course director for the Sports Medicine curriculum at the 2017 Association of Academic Physiatrists annual meeting.
Adam resides in Pittsburgh and enjoys running, cycling and traveling.
